Seasons

Which season suits your trip

Winter

December to March

Snow on the ground, Snowbowl open, sledding and tubing for the kids. December through March each average 15 to 21 inches of snow at the airport, and nights fall well below freezing. Winter driving calls for chains or a car built for snow, and the overnight parking ban applies in town.

Spring

April and May

Spring is dry: May averages less than an inch of precipitation. Days warm to the 60s, but nights stay near freezing, and April can still bring a few inches of snow.

Summer

June to August

Highs around 80°F, and nights in the 40s and 50s. June is the driest month of the year. Monsoon season officially runs from June 15 to September 30, and July and August are the wettest months, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Fall

September to November

September is still warm, with highs in the mid-70s. By October the nights drop to around freezing, and November usually brings the first real snow. It's a good season for hiking and for day trips to the Grand Canyon.

For today's snow, the cameras help: the live downtown camera, the ADOT road cameras on I-17 and I-40, and Snowbowl's three mountain cams are all among the Flagstaff webcams.

Snow in town and snow on the mountain are two different things. Snowbowl, at 9,200 feet and up, can have snow when the streets downtown are clear. Road conditions and chain rules are on az511.gov or 511.

Summer and fall

Monsoon storms and fire restrictions

Summer mornings are usually clear, so start hikes early and be off exposed ridges by early afternoon. When the forest is dry, the Coconino National Forest sets fire restrictions in stages, and campfires can be banned altogether.

The current stage decides whether you can light a camp stove or a grill. The stage is set by an order for a specific area, and it changes during the season.

Monsoon season
June 15 to September 30. Moist air usually reaches northern Arizona in the first week of July, but there's no fixed start day
Thunderstorms
Mostly in the afternoon and evening. If a storm is close, no place outdoors is safe: get into a building or a hard-topped car
Biggest danger
Flash floods
Fire restrictions, Stage 1
No fires, including charcoal and briquettes, except in Forest Service fire rings at developed sites
Fire restrictions, Stage 2
No fires even at developed sites, including wood stoves. Pressurized gas stoves are still allowed
Fireworks
