Hotel Monte Vista

Sleep where the stories are told

The Monte Vista was built in 1926 and opened in 1927, and its rooftop sign is one of downtown's landmarks. Many of its rooms are named after famous guests, from John Wayne and Carole Lombard to Freddie Mercury. Its ghost stories, many of them set in the bar, are local legend, told best on a walking tour after dark.

The Weatherford is a block from the Monte Vista at 23 N Leroux Street. The third floor was begun in 1899 and the hotel reopened on January 1, 1900. Henry Taylor bought it in 1975, and since the restoration in 2016 it has had 17 hotel rooms.

Upstairs is the Zane Grey Ballroom, named after the Western writer, with stained glass and an antique Brunswick bar brought from Tombstone. It's where the Weatherford's best-known ghost story is set. The stories are told on the downtown walking tours, and one operator runs a ghost tour of the hotel itself.

It's worth a look on any walk downtown.
